Jim,
Thank you so much for your excellent perspective. What great bonds you are forming with your son while playing a game you both enjoy! It is a wonderful way to spend time together, develop a healthy habit and make a lifetime of memories. Best of luck to you both this fall and beyond and keep in touch!

My 17-yr old son is a 2d year midget--and when I say 2d year, I mean he's entering his second year of ever playing hockey. But he loves the game. We live in Wichita Falls where there is no summer ice, so we play in the Oklahoma City adult league, together, in the Summer. He gets on the ice once a week and we just have fun playing the game together--no pressure, just the guys having a good time. This fall, I'm his Midget youth team coach. We're playing house level and our focus will be fun and development. The point is, my son won't be going to the show--but he will have a sport that developes a multitude of skills--from quick thinking to quick feet, and more. And it will give him the opportunity to make a world of friends in any city with a rink. We play for the love of the game, and as he becomes an adult, we'll get to continue to have our night out!

Thanks for the great comment and for your perspective. It is true, hockey is a sport for all ages (as are many others). The important thing is not how well you play or what team you make, but that you like it and, to steal a line from Nike...you "just do it!" Kudos to you for playing just for the love of the game!

I just turned 62 and I'm still playing in a men's league in Austin Texas. I agree with everything that Coach Chic said about the love of the game. My goaltending isn't what it was when I played in college in the sixties (my butterfly style looks more like I'm kneeling down to pray), but I don't really care. It's all about still going out and playing the game (and the post game activities with guys I like). If the kid likes playing, then just hope he sticks with it. It's a lifetime thing.

What do you think of this advice? Have you found yourself in a similar situation? Do you know someone else who has had this same problem? Please provide your comments. We love to hear what our readers have to say...and your advice might be just what another sports parent needs to hear!
